First Steps Into Management ILM Endorsed Programme

This programme, made up of a series of interactive workshops, is designed for anyone working in an educational environment who has recently been promoted into a managerial position or maybe has been managing for a while but never had any formal management training.

We develop the core skills needed to manage a team effectively and delegates complete assessed reflective journal entries in between each session to develop self-awareness and apply learning. Being an ILM Endorsed Programme means there are no essays to complete, but the quality of content and delivery is recognised as meeting ILM standards.

why come on the course?

  • Do you wish you could give some of your managers more time and formal training to support them in their managerial roles?
  • Are some of your team more consistent with how they communicate, delegate and support their people than others?
  • Would you like to support your newer managers with structured management training but are concerned about burdening them with lots of assignment work?

If you’ve answered yes to any of the above questions, then this course is for your school or college.

What is it?

This programme runs over a period of around 10 months, with 9 workshops, most of which are full-day sessions. Each of these workshops focuses on key management skills such as communication, delegation, coaching and giving feedback, time management, managing poor performance and managing recruitment and inclusion.

Each workshop builds on the last, so delegates can apply the skills they’re learning to specific situations. After each workshop, delegates will complete 2 short journal entries where they reflect on a specific aspect of the session, thinking about how it relates to their situation and job role.

These journal entries form the assessment of learning and delegates will receive individual written feedback on each of these to help them improve and apply their skills. At the end of the programme delegates receive a certificate from the ILM in recognition of their achievement.

What will I do on the programme?

Each workshop on the programme is different, but they’re all interactive and practical.

We’ll take delegates through some management theory, but we’ll support them to relate it to their own situations so it’s meaningful and relevant.
Some workshops are theatre-based, where our actors will bring scenarios and behaviours to life, helping delegates to apply skills in practice.
By the end of the programme, delegates will have developed a toolkit of management skills to help them lead their teams effectively.

embedding the learning.

An ILM Endorsed Programme is very different to an accredited one – there are no essays or assignments after each workshop. However, we do ask learners in order to complete this programme to write a reflective journal after each workshop on how they will use the learning and embed it into their daily lives back at work. These journal entries are prompted by set questions and are self-reflective.

Each workshop is a month apart so delegates have time to take the learning back and begin to apply it in their roles. We also offer further additional digital resources to support extended learning as a blended option.

Learning Outcomes.

By the end of this course, delegates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of key management skills and how these relate to their personal areas for development.
  • Describe and explain the key skills and behaviours of a manager.
  • Reflect on their individual skills and behaviours, identifying areas where improvement would enable more effective management of others.
  • Evaluate their personal progress and use this information to identify and plan future development.

Some faq's about ILM Endorsed Programme - First Steps Into Management .

0.1What is Theatre based learning?

Theatre Based Learning is the technique we use to bring learning to life by using our actors to perform scenarios, based on real case studies.

Theatre Based Learning can be either observational (where learners watch scenes and discuss) OR participative (where we use techniques like real-play and practice, forum where learners interact with the actors and direct them or hot-seating where learners give feedback to individual characters and make suggestions). This course uses our actors to both demonstrate presentation skills and often made mistakes and techniques with the ability for all learners to present and receive feedback

0.2What are the benefits of ILM Endorsed Management Training?
A standard ILM accredited programme has essay assignments linked to each workshop. This can be challenging for delegates who have many demands on their time and can lead to overwhelm or disengagement. Our ILM Endorsed programme blends a joined-up learning experience, with workshops tailored to educational contexts along with reflective journaling to embed learning and support application of skills development in the workplace.
